SAFE WATER 2000
During the International Drinking Water Supply and Sanitation
Decade (1981 - 1990), 1.35 billion people in the developing countries
gained access to clean drinking water. Nearly 750 million got
improved sanitation. But 1.2 billion human beings still lack
safe water and 1.7 billion, sanitation. The video shows how governments,
donors, research institutes, the private sector, non-governmental
organizations and community members can work together to apply
the lessons of the Decade and bring safe water and adequate sanitation
to all. It covers technologies, the need for community involvement
and the importance of women's participation.

make it a reality: Pacific islanders in Kiribati, by constructing
simple handpumps; Cuban officials, in cleaning up Havana Bay;
women in Lesotho, through wells close to home.

IF GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY
Even the poorest people will work to improve their lives, if
given the opportunity. The Trickle- Up Program (TUP) offers them
that chance by providing US$100 grants to groups of small-scale
entrepreneurs wishing to start their own businesses. Since it
was started in 1979, TUP has assisted 19,000 micro enterprises
in over 80 countries. The video shows TUP in action in Nepal
and Guatemala.
